Image of confirmed COVID 19 caseUpdated Dec. 1: KFL&A Public Health has confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at Rideau Heights Public School on Dec. 1. The student was already self-isolating, so there is no new impact on the school community.  On Nov. 30, one class cohort was directed to isolate. There are now two cases in one cohort isolating. The school is open.

In the interests of maintaining privacy, the board will not identify people that have received positive COVID-19 tests.

Affected members of the school community have been notified.

All school families are asked to continue to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and screen all students daily as most cases of COVID-19 are acquired in the home setting. KFL&A Public Health is also asking families to use the extended symptom list for monitoring symptoms:

Fever (37.8°C/100°F) and/or chills
Cough or barking cough
Shortness of breath
Decrease or loss of taste or smell
Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea
Fatigue
Muscle aches and pain
Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing
Runny or stuffy nose
Abdominal pain
Headache
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Decreased or lack of appetite

The school and board are working with KFL&A Public Health to identify cohorts of students, staff and others who may have been in close contact with the COVID-19 positive person at school. Not all students or staff will be affected by a positive case. A positive case at a school does not mean the individual was exposed to COVID-19 at the school. They may have been exposed somewhere else in the community or outside of the KFL&A region.

The school will clean and disinfect all areas where the individual may have been, and will work with KFL&A Public Health to develop a plan to protect all members of the school community to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines, the board has posted this information on its website. The board will continue to follow the directions of KFL&A Public Health who has the responsibility to manage confirmed cases of COVID-19.

KFL&A Public Health, the school and board are taking all necessary steps to prevent further spread of the virus both in the schools and the community. As always, the health and safety of students, staff and the school community remain our priority.
